'Sunbeam ke baare mein jitna bolu utna kam hai…’
I fall short of words to adequately express my gratitude to Sunbeam.
Whatever I have achieved in life is because of Sunbeam. Coming from a humble background, I
wouldn’t have completed my education (B.Sc. IT & B.Ed., 2017) without the support I received from this NGO, right from Sr. Kg.
My journey began in 2001 when a Community Development Worker surveyed our slums in Bandra East and introduced Sunbeam to my parents. This opened free education classes for me. My father suffered paralysis and my mother worked as a domestic helper earning Rs.3,000 and a single meal for he family.
I am blessed to have parents and a brother who encouraged me to study. To supplement my mother's meagre income, after schooling, my brother did a 1-year Welder course and worked in Mumbai & Dubai; he now works as a Supervisor with Bhumi Builders.
Sunbeam gave me more than academics:
4th-std speech – Shanta didi handed me a paper and encouraged me to deliver a speech. Her
support boosted my confidence when I gave my first public speech and received applause.
Beyond parents’ means – extracurricular activities, exposure trips & picnics that made my dreams come true.
Teachers’ love – they taught students from diverse backgrounds with patience, inspiring me to become a teacher.
Values from didis – Khurshid didi & Shanta didi guided us at every step, teaching punctuality, perseverance & sincerity.
I came from a very poor family and, as a girl, never imagined completing my education – Sunbeam made it possible. I taught for 3 years at Sivai Girls High School, Andheri West (2 years after marriage), and am now on a break to care for my little one.

My journey with Sunbeam was the most memorable time I have ever spent. I was from a poor family like every other Sunbeam student. My father was a scavenger and my mother, a housewife. I studied in Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathi Medium Municipal School, Worli. In the 4th std. when I got to know about Sunbeam from my classmates, I immediately joined the organisation.
As time went by, Sunbeam taught me to compete with the outside world and assisted me in pursuing the field in which I wanted to go and make a career for myself.
The support that I received and the tireless efforts on the part of every teacher and other team members have been priceless.
What has stayed with me till date is the quality education imparted at Sunbeam and the various facilities made available for the students. Even now, occasionally, when I meet my classmates, we spend time reminiscing about the wonderful days spent at Sunbeam during our childhood.
I am really very thankful to this Trust for what they have provided us with. Today, if I am a software developer, I give full credit to Sunbeam. They helped me to improve upon my English and other studies related matters so that I could be where I am in life today.
I wish to thank Sunbeam, Khurshid didi and all those who are a part of the organisation for helping me and the other children as well. My best wishes to Sunbeam for its future and I hope that it will always continue to help many more students who have the talent but lack opportunities to prove their potential.

My hunger for learning was appeased by Sunbeam
I worked as a Team Manager at SBI Cards & Payment Services Pvt. Ltd. and now serve as Deputy Manager at ICICI Bank. I want to share how Sunbeam transformed my life. I am the second eldest of four sisters in a lower-middle-class family where my father was the sole breadwinner.
Due to limited income, my parents could not afford English-medium schooling for any of us, so we all studied in Hindi medium schools. As the saying goes, “Don’t wait for opportunity to knock, leave the door open.” I always wanted to learn new things but couldn’t afford extra tuitions. I heard about Sunbeam from a friend who said there were tutors who taught free of cost and were very kind-hearted.
In 2006 I joined Sunbeam education classes. The teachers taught every subject in detail, motivating us to study and perform well in exams. They built a strong foundation that helped us find steady, secure jobs. It is essential we learn from organisations like Sunbeam that provided free education, that students too can give back to society. My learnings at Sunbeam have been inspirational for my career in many ways.
Despite completing my education in Hindi medium, I gained good command over spoken English and also enjoyed extracurricular activities like picnics, outdoor games, haldi-kumkum functions, dance competitions, weekly quizzes, and annual events. I have sweet memories of Aksa Beach picnics, Water Kingdom trips, etc., which my family couldn’t afford for my siblings and me.
I thank teachers like Khurshid di, Shanta di, Veena di, Yallama di, Mitesh bhaiya, Glenn sir, Ganesh bhaiya, Swapnali di and many more who encouraged me to be a go-getter. While interviewing candidates, I found some lacked confidence in English because they studied in Hindi medium. My conviction to speak English comfortably comes from Sunbeam.
I believe many underprivileged children are eager to study and follow their dreams. Sunbeam has been the platform for such children. I am very thankful to Sunbeam for giving me the opportunity to complete my education and nurture my dreams.

Investing in futures: A Sunbeam scholarship recipient’s story
I am honoured to share my testimonial regarding the invaluable support I have received from the
Sunbeam organisation, which has significantly impacted my educational journey and future aspirations. I come from a close-knit family of four, including my parents and my younger brother. My father works as a mechanic, and my mother is a housewife.
Both of my parents have completed their studies till 10th std. and have instilled in me the importance of hard work and perseverance.
Growing up in a working-class neighbourhood, we faced financial challenges at times, but my family always prioritised education and resourcefulness. I attribute my values of resilience and empathy to my upbringing in this supportive environment. Coming from a humble family background, pursuing higher education seemed like a distant dream due to financial constraints. However, my life took a transformative turn when I was introduced to Sunbeam through my younger brother. He had also benefited from their programmes as he was introduced to Sunbeam through his school i.e. Adarsh English High School, Prabhadevi, Mumbai.
I have been associated with Sunbeam for the past 8 years, and the experience has been nothing short of life-changing. Sunbeam’s intervention has provided me with financial assistance that has been instrumental in shaping my academic path. With this NGO’s support, I have been able to pursue my passion for Masters of Technology in Mechanical Engineering with specialization in Machine Design, a degree that aligns with my career aspirations and personal interests. The decision to choose this specific degree was influenced by my desire to make a meaningful impact in Machine Design, and I am confident that this academic journey will equip me with the skills and knowledge needed to achieve my goals.
The Sunbeam scholarship has not only lightened the financial burden on my family but has also boosted my confidence and determination to excel in my studies. Their unwavering belief in my potential has motivated me to strive for excellence and give back to the community in the future I am deeply grateful to Sunbeam for their continuous support and commitment to empowering
individuals like me to pursue higher education and realise our dreams. This scholarship has been a beacon of hope and opportunity, and I look forward to making the most out of this privilege to create a positive impact on society.
Thank you, Sunbeam, for believing in me and investing in my future.

Support beyond scholarship to career guidance and counselling
Hello! I am an ex-student of Sunbeam. Heartiest congratulations to the organisation and its team members on their completion of 25 years and many more to go. I’m a Lab Technician by profession and doing great in this field. Anything to do with medical science intrigues and appeals to me strongly, which is why I opted for this career.
Currently I am working at P.D. Hinduja Hospital, Khar Unit, on a probation period of 6 months. Processing the blood, releasing correct reports and communicating with patients everyday satisfies me a lot.
I would really like to thank Sunbeam for helping me out financially to complete my degree. Around 14 years ago, I got to know about Sunbeam from my younger sister Isha who joined this NGO when she was in K.G. Currently, she is pursuing BAF. My youngest sister Shreya too is a Sunbeam beneficiary. Currently, she is studying in Jr. College. Sunbeam has helped all of us throughout our education journey and continues to do so even now.
As all of us are aware, education costs are quite high and unaffordable for lower middle-class families like ours. This is where Sunbeam’s helping hand is highly appreciated. Their support has gone way beyond education scholarship to career guidance and counselling.
I wish to end my testimonial by expressing my gratitude on behalf of my sisters and myself for receiving an opportunity to quality education and fulfilling our career dreams.

“Work is worship” is what I learnt from Khurshid didi
I hail from Bijapur, Karnataka, where my father worked as a labourer, loading and unloading cotton bundles. In 1991, at the age of one, I moved to Mumbai with my family. Here, my father worked as a labourer at different construction sites. But he had an option. If he wished to double his income he would have to undergo training in plastering, which he readily did, and after upgrading his skills took up the mason’s job.
Our family formed a part of the migrant lot and work compelled us to move from one construction site to the other each time the building construction came to an end at that particular site.
It was at the Curry Road construction site that I first met Khurshid didi, who was introduced to me by Fakir Shaikh. He happened to be a construction labourer’s child from a small group of students who sat on the steps of the CRY office and had picked up the alphabets and numbers from Khurshid didi and a few more staff working at the CRY office at Arthur Road. I somehow managed to convince my parents of the need to educate my sister and myself at Sunbeam and there was no turning back.
Over a thousand students have benefited from Sunbeam to date. But I consider myself one of the most fortunate ones among them. Why so? Because I had the privilege to be nurtured directly by Khurshid didi who entered my life in end 1997 and till date continues to be my teacher, imparting lessons in life.
It is at Didi’s house that I spent most of my Sundays, school holidays and summer vacations, especially from the 8th standard onwards. Seeing her at work was an eye-opening experience for me. She never let anything come in the way of her work for Sunbeam to which she had dedicated her entire life.
I remember a period when she lay on a surgical bed at home with multiple rib fractures but the workload at Sunbeam did not permit her the luxury of resting even then. Every single day she managed to get out of bed with someone’s assistance, so I couldn’t bear to see her work alone at home. My summer vacation was on and I decided to lend her a helping hand. Though I couldn’t be of much use to her with her drafting work since I was studying in Hindi medium, I could at least take the printouts of the documents, file them and assist her in admin related work.
I started my studies a little late in life by the time I passed my SSC exams, I was 18 and eligible to take up a job. At first when I broached the topic, the idea of being absorbed by the organisation as an account’s assistant didn’t appeal to didi at all and she was quite hesitant to even consider my request. But as usual, she let her heart rule over her head and decided to give me a chance. Working under her for five long years as a Sunbeam employee, first as an account’s assistant for a year and later on as the main accountant of the organisation for 4 years, has been my privilege.
My college life was the best learning period for me – both at the academic level as well as the practical accounts work that I learnt at Sunbeam. But more importantly, I learnt a number of values in life, also work ethics. Overall, working at Sunbeam moulded me into a much better human being.
Later, after seeking didi’s permission, I made my first move towards the corporate world while simultaneously pursuing my further studies of becoming a CA. I wished to make a career in the field of taxation and auditing. I have completed my CA inter exams but am yet to clear my final year exams of CA. After spending a few years in the corporate world, doing a job did not give me satisfaction anymore and I decided to be self-employed. So, I started working as a consultant and later on launched a Proprietorship firm of my own where my staff took over the day-to-day servicing part of the work, while I got busy getting new clients. Moreover, I chose to pursue a law degree to benefit my career.
I am now glad to have completed my LLB and be recognised as an advocate. During the pre-Covid times, my work flourished. However, with its unexpected entry the world over, it took me unaware too. My business took an unexpected U-turn and my clients left one by one, leaving me shattered. I reached a stage when I had to close down my office and let my staff leave. And I switched over to my old role of being a Consultant. Yet, not the one to give up on myself, soon after the first phase of Covid, I approached a few practicing CAs and became their business partner.
However, it wasn’t the most ideal situation since I ended up doing the work whereas the CAs remained the signing authorities. Since over 4 years now, I have been a tax consultant at Vodafone Idea. In order to give a boost to my income, I work as an SAP trainer in Max Edutech Solutions.
I am still associated with Sunbeam and am grateful to Khurshid didi for having provided me with an opportunity during the Covid period to lend my voluntary services to the organisation that had once given me free education and helped me nurture my dreams. Majority of the parents of our child beneficiaries had lost their jobs, and I, in turn, helped them out by training them on how to register at various sites that offered jobs, where they would be able to apply even for the unskilled ones such as security guards, housekeeping, delivery boys, and the like. I prepared simple step-by-step videos for them to be able to follow the process of registration and formed WhatsApp groups to guide them online.
As on date, I serve Sunbeam as a finance and accounts consultant and will continue to give back to society via this noble organisation.
