Expanding Horizons: Sunbeam Virar

As part of our ongoing mission to provide quality education to underpriviledged children, Sunbeam is excited to announce its expansion to Virar, a distant suburb of Mumbai in Palghar district.

Why Virar? The need is immense:

  • No educational NGO currently operates in this area, leaving hundreds of marginalized children without access to quality education.
  • We’ve secured 5 spacious, well-ventilated classrooms and a hall on a long-term rental basis, strategically located near the beneficiaries’ dwellings in chawls of Bolinj and surrounding villages.
  • A team of well-educated, kind-hearted individuals from social work and education backgrounds have offered to volunteer their time and talent to our cause.
  • We’re also fortunate to have dedicated individuals willing to join as staff, despite the modest pay scales typical of an NGO.
  • Most importantly, the hundreds of children here have immense potential and simply need an opportunity to receive quality education.

With this expansion, we aim to empower more young lives and create a ripple effect of positive
change in the community. Stay tuned for updates on our journey in Virar!

A Glimpse into The Beneficiaries Lives

The children we’re eager to serve in Virar face challenges that might seem unimaginable to many. Let their stories speak for themselves:

  • “If I attend classes daily and perform well, will you give me a cycle?” asked a 5th standard student, who walks 30 minutes to school and back home every day, regardless of the weather.
  • Little Alisa and Aliza from Bhandarwada village were overjoyed to hear about Sunbeam’s classes, asking if they could join from the very next day – not knowing it’d be a month or two before we begin.

These children come from backgrounds where basic necessities are a luxury:

  • Water scarcity is a harsh reality, with one tap serving 20+ families on alternate days. Women queue up for hours to fetch drinking water.
  • Some families spend 10-15% of their monthly income on buying water for drinking and cooking.
  • Parents work as auto drivers, electricians, vendors, security guards, and domestic helpers, struggling to make ends meet.

These stories underscore the difference quality education can make. At Sunbeam, we’re committed to empowering these young lives and breaking the cycle of poverty.
