Mention the word, ‘picnic’, and hundreds of eyes light up with uncontrollable glee. Homework gets done doubly fast, little monsters instantly transform into sweet, saintly souls and days, minutes, even seconds are ticked off until that magic moment.
These excursions with their promise of adventure, fun, games and of course, oodles of food are a huge motivator for them. More than freedom from routine chores, they represent an opportunity for them to just be themselves. To enjoy a childhood which is all too often snatched from them.
At Sunbeam, the primary section enjoys the weekly extracurricular activity classes that are treated as a special honour. These inspiring sessions serve as a powerful incentive, significantly enhancing attendance in regular academic classes. Our young learners immerse themselves in drawing, painting and craft workshops, delighting in the creation of festival-specific projects – like crafting and decorating diyas for Diwali.
Sunbeam’s philosophy is to fill classrooms with happiness, weaving joyful extracurricular experiences into the fabric of everyday learning.

At Sunbeam we believe that for our child beneficiaries, value education is of utmost importance – equally vital as academics in their lives. Therefore, at an early age, we begin instilling life values that children can incorporate into their daily existence. We are convinced that children should be nurtured to become upright, value driven individuals in society. Hence, we place as much emphasis on value education as on academics at Sunbeam.
When we enroll children into Sunbeam education classes, many are not yet at the academic level of the formal school standard they are placed in. For these students we conduct remedial classes—our “bridge courses.”
Our teachers start teaching them from scratch, and within a year they not only master the alphabet and numbers but also reach the curriculum level of the standard they attend. Conducting remedial “bridge” courses is one of Sunbeam’s most important activities, and it has achieved a remarkably high success rate.

Sunbeam recognises that some of our students are exceptionally high-achievers – academically bright, quick-thinking and eager to excel. For these learners we create separate batches distinct from the remedial classes designed for students needing extra support.
The curriculum we follow for these advanced groups mirrors the standard school syllabus, but we supplement it with targeted coaching that challenges them to go further. This additional guidance enables them to emerge as toppers in their respective schools, setting a benchmark for academic excellence.
For our high-school students – Grades 9 and 10 – professional coaching is essential to prepare them for the board examinations. In these final school years, we transition them from our free daily education classes to partnered professional coaching centres.
We carefully select coaching institutes that have proven academic track records and whose leadership demonstrates a social conscience, willing to collaborate with Sunbeam’s mission of delivering quality education to marginalised children. These centres offer substantial fee discounts to our students.
The cost-sharing arrangement is structured to make parents equal partners and contributors, as follows:
– Sunbeam sponsors 50% whilst parents contribute up to 50 % of the discounted fee. Year after year, SSC board exam results have been excellent, thanks to our affiliated coaching partners – Sai Classes, Gurukrupa Classes, Vision Classes, and Dinesh Classes.

From the very start we have held firm belief that children from marginalised communities possess the potential to excel academically and carve successful careers for themselves—and they have proved us right.
It is a hard-won achievement and a source of great pride that each year over a hundred students transition from school directly to college without discontinuing their studies midway.
These self-confident learners carry faith in their own abilities and talent to thrive in management, engineering, medicine, accountancy or any other field they choose. Most are first-generation learners in their families, paving the way for future generations.
Sunbeam’s support continues beyond school:
-Annual scholarship for Junior College students to cover essential costs.
-Degree College sponsorship of 25% of the annual Professional Degree fees, while empowered parents who have saved diligently over the years – contribute the remaining 75%.
This partnership between Sunbeam and families from low-income backgrounds is highly commendable, demonstrating that sustained commitment can turn potential into achievement.
Sunbeam conducts regular career counselling sessions for its students to help them make informed decisions about the academic streams they should choose after completing school. In these sessions, the counsellors guide the students through the various degree and post-graduation courses available. The counselling focuses on aligning each student’s choice with their individual aptitude and interests, enabling them to select the right stream and subsequent programs that set them up for success in their future careers.

During the Covid 19 crisis, Sunbeam refused to let the education of its beneficiaries slip. The organization swiftly shifted to online sessions enabling every batch across its programs to continue learning without interruption.
Because our children come from marginalized societies and many of them could not afford Android phones. Sunbeam sponsored second-hand handsets for them, ensuring they could join the virtual classes. Through “Learning Beyond Walls,” the online sessions kept students engaged allowing their education to proceed uninterrupted despite the pandemic’s challenges.
Sunbeam’s digital initiative demonstrated its commitment to educational continuity, giving students the opportunity to pursue their studies seamlessly and stay on track with their goals even in their toughest times.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, many parents of our beneficiaries lost their jobs and were left without any source of income. Lacking formal education and familiarity with digital job-search platforms, they found it challenging to secure new employment. In response, Sunbeam stepped in to guide them step-by-step on using online portals such as Naukri.com, and other job search websites. Through virtual workshops, we helped these parents create profiles, upload resumes and apply for suitable positions, enabling them to regain employment and support their families once again.

Sunbeam’s mission is rooted in education, yet in moments of crisis we extend a helping hand beyond the classroom. The recent torrential rains that battered Mumbai left the Khar East hutments – home to many of our beneficiaries submerged under floodwaters, destroying belongings and upending lives. In response to their urgent plea, Sunbeam stepped forward with financial support, empowering them to rebuild and restore hope amidst the devastation.
