Ms. Khurshid Dabdi Founder and Managing Trustee In late 1996, Khurshid Dabdi began her community service journey by connecting with children of labourers at a construction site near the CRY (Child Rights and You) office, where she was employed. This marked the beginning of a lifelong mission. By December 1999, Sunbeam was formally registered under the Bombay Public Trust Act 1950, expanding its outreach to over a hundred children at the Phoenix Mills and Kamala Mills construction sites. In the years to follow, the organisation spread its wings to the street, slum and chawl dwellers of Mumbai and today reaches out to 1200+ children primarily in the area of education. Moreover, the earlier lot of our 800+ beneficiaries have already completed their education and are contributing members of society.
For three decades, Khurshid has dedicated herself as the full-time Managing Trustee, driving Sunbeam’s vision to empower underprivileged children by nurturing their potential and guiding them to cope with life’s challenges and improve their well-being. Her belief that even the economically weaker sections possess immense talent and can thrive with the right mentorship remains at the core of Sunbeam’s mission.
For Khurshid, Sunbeam is her temple and her work with children is her puja – a lifelong devotion that fuels every step of her mission.

At Sunbeam, we believe in adopting a holistic approach to education and empowerment. Our methodology is centered around the following key principles:
Building Bridges with Parents for Student Success
We work closely with the community to foster a supportive environment that encourages students to pursue their education and career aspirations. We conduct regular parents’ meetings to make them equal partners in our journey of change.
Laying the Academic Groundwork
We identify and enroll students aged 5 to 7 years to provide them with free early education, involving parents and caregivers as vital educational partners, thereby building a strong academic foundation for future success.
Helping Hands in Studies
Our dedicated team provides individualized attention and guidance to each student, ensuring they complete their education and not drop out midway.
Championing Girls’ Education for an Equitable Society
Educating girls is a powerful driver of empowerment, family well-being, and national development, while promoting better health and social outcomes. We have placed a strong focus on girl child education and have witnessed a remarkable transformation. Earlier, fewer than 40% of girls completed their schooling, but through our team’s dedicated efforts, girls are now not only finishing their education but also outnumbering boys in degree colleges – a clear sign of progress toward a more equitable society.
